Wednesday, June 18, 2014 – Day 1
Meet at RDU airport, American Airlines area at 10:10A. Fly RDU to Miami to Quito.

  • AA Flight 124: depart RDU 12:55P, arrive MIAMI 3:05P
  • AA Flight 947, depart MIAMI 7:50P, arrive QUITO 10:50P

Clear immigration and customs in Quito. Meet Monica Navarrete of Heifer Ecuador staff. Drive to the hotel. Beginning tomorrow, we’ll meet each evening for nightly reports, to preview the next day, reflect, and answer questions and provide suggestions on what to wear and bring. Overnight in Hotel Sebastian in Quito.

Thursday, June 19, 2014 – Day 2
Pack it up! Altitude adaptation day. 10:00A welcome and orientation at the Heifer Ecuador office. Presentations on Heifer’s history, the 12 Cornerstones, the community development model, and Heifer’s work in Ecuador. Drive along the Avenue of Volcanoes to Cotopaxi National Park. Will we see the snowy peak? Drive to Latacunga. Nightly Meeting & Reports: Groups share daily meteorological and cultural observations. We begin the nightly ritual of composing a daily journal entry to post on the Museum’s website for our groups following along at home. Assemble the teaching boxes to be used in tomorrow’s school workshop. Groups review their chosen activities. Overnight in Hotel Villa de Tacunga in Latacunga.

Friday, June 20, 2014 – Day 3
Breakfast, travel to school in Cumbijín Community. Give workshop demonstrating activities and materials we bring. First meet with teachers to introduce and tweak activities, then do activities with students. Leave the teaching boxes for the school. Lunch in Hotel. Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Villa de Tacunga in Latacunga.

Saturday, June 21, 2014 – Day 4
Pack it up! Travel to Cumbijín Community to visit Pacha Project. (Camelid production with value chains in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru to assure Food Security.) Lunch in the community. Travel to Bellavista. Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Bellavista in Tandayapa.

Sunday, June 22, 2014 – Day 5
Pre-breakfast bird walk. Cloud forest hike. Nighttime nature rambles. Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Bellavista in Tandayapa.

Monday, June 23, 2014 – Day 6
Pack it up! Breakfast, check-out, leave 8:00A for Quito Airport (4 hour drive). 2:00P flight to Guayaquil. Drive to Ballenita. Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hostería Farallon Dillon in Ballenita.

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 – Day 7
Pack it up! Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to Programa Manglares (mangroves/artisanal fish) in the Chandu Community. Lunch with the community. Travel to Puerto López. Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hostería Mandála in Puerto López.

Wednesday, June 25, 2014 – Day 8
Leave early from Puerto López for a boat ride to La Isla de la Plata. Marine mammal observations – will we see Humpback Whales? Coastal bird hike starring Blue Footed Boobies. Back to the mainland. Closing Meeting: Reflection on the experience. Overnight at the Hostería Mandála in Puerto López.

Thursday, June 26, 2014 – Day 9
Individual Reflection Session and brief swim time at Los Frailes Beach. Travel from Puerto López to Guayaquil on the Sun Road. Overnight in Hotel Palace in Guayaquil.

Friday, June 27, 2014 – Day 10
Leave hotel at 5:30A. Fly Guayaquil to Miami to RDU.

  • AA Flight 948, depart GUAYAQUIL 7:45A, arrive MIAMI 1:05P
  • AA Flight 1541, depart MIAMI 4:45P, arrive RDU 6:50P
