June 18–June 26, 2012

Monday, June 18, 2012 Day 1
Meet at RDU (Raleigh-Durham) airport at 10:30am
Depart RDU 1:10pm, arrive MIAMI 3:20
Depart MIAMI 7:55pm, arrive QUITO 10:55pm (dinner)
Fly Raleigh-Durham to Miami to Quito. Clear immigration and customs, meet Monica Navarrete of Heifer staff and Miguel Castanel, our nature/culture guide and translator. Proceed to Hostal Los Alpes. Each evening we’ll meet for nightly reports, to preview the next day, reflect, and answer questions and provide suggestions on what to wear and bring. Overnight in Hostal Los Alpes in Quito.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Day 2
Pack it up. Altitude adaptation day. Welcome and orientation at the Heifer Ecuador office. Presentation on Heifer’s history, the 12 Cornerstones, the community development model, and Heifer’s work in Ecuador.  Assemble the teaching boxes created by last North Carolina teacher group for use in our June 22 workshop at school in Palmar. Lunch with Heifer Ecuador staff.

Travel to Lactacunga. Meet with members of the Guaman Poma Center. Heifer has worked with this group to raise geese since they were children.  Nightly Reports — Groups share daily meteorological and cultural observations.  We begin the nightly ritual of composing a daily journal entry to post on the Museum’s blog for our groups following along at home.
Overnight in Villa de Tacunga in Latacunga.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 Day 3
Pack it up, Quick breakfast at Viracocha Center (paramo management).  Visit Quilotoa Lake, a water-filled caldera and the most western volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. Visit the Rural Corridor of Communal Paramos: Cotopaxi and Tunguragua Project, in the Paramo Maca Grande.  Lunch with the community. Travel to Baños, Visit an agro-ecological farm, time permitting.  Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Miramelindo outside Baños.

Thursday, June 21, 2012 Day 4
Pack it up.  Travel to Baños de Agua Santa, known as the “Gateway to the Amazon.”  Visit Reserva Sangay, and the Volcano Tungurahua. Will we see orchids?  Will we see smoke? Fly from Latacunga to Guayaquil.  Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Palace in Guayaquil.

Friday, June 22, 2012 Day 5
Pack it up. Travel to Palmar community and the school (Escuela de Formación Artesanal Pichincha).  Use teaching boxes to work with teachers & students. Have lunch with the community.  Travel to Puerto Lopez, on the coast.  Nightly Meeting & Reports, including debriefing of the day’s work at the school.  Overnight in Hotel Cumbres de Ayangue.

Saturday, June 23, 2012 Day 6
Pack it up!  Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the “Recovering Agro-Biodiversity on the Coast to Improve Production and Nutrition of Small-Farming Families” in Palmar.  Nightly Meeting & Reports. Overnight in Hotel Mandala in Puerto Lopez.

Sunday, June 24, 2012 Day 7
Leave early from Puerto Lopez for a boat ride to La Isla de la Plata. Marine mammal observations — will we see Humpback Whales? Coastal bird hike starring Blue Footed Boobies. Back to the mainland. Closing Meeting. Reflection on the experience.  Overnight at the Hosteria Mandala, PACK TO FLY ROUND 1.

Monday, June 25, 2012 Day 8
Individual Reflection Session and brief swim time at Los Frailes Beach. Travel from Puerto Lopez to Guayaquil on the Sun Road.  Overnight in Hotel Palace in Guayaquil. PACK TO FLY ROUND 2.

Tuesday, June 26, 2012 Day 9
Depart Guayaquil 7:00A arrive Miami 12:25P (breakfast)
Depart Miami 5:00P arrive RDU 7:05P
Home sweet home!
